It's not just questions like "What is a Pekingese dog" that Google gets —
it's questions like, "Compare a Pekingese with a Chihuahua." To better deal with
such comparison requests, and other long, complex queries, Google said Thursday
it has overhauled its search algorithm. The update coincides with a mobile app
overhaul, too, that changes how information shows up on users' phones.
"We keep expanding features of the Knowledge Graph so it can answer more
questions — even those that don’t have a simple answer," wrote Amit Singhal,
Google's senior vice president of search, on the company's Inside
Searchblog.
In one of his examples, you can ask Google: "Tell me about Impressionist
artists," and you will not only see who the artists are, "you can dive in to
learn more about each of them and explore their most famous works. If you want
to switch to Abstract artists, you can do that really easily with our new filter
tool."
If you want to compare two things, like butter with olive oil and find out
how much saturated fat is in each, the new comparison tool "gives you new
insights" about butter and olive oil so you can "compose your own answer"
essentially.
The "Hummingbird" algorithm was introduced about a month ago, and is in
place for about 90 percent of worldwide searches on Google, he said.
Also being upgraded is the way we "speak" to Google using our mobile
devices.
"Having a 'conversation' with Google should also be more natural," Singhal
wrote. "ldeally, you wouldn’t need to pull out your phone or tap buttons to use
Google. We’re not quite there yet, but you can already do a lot with just your
voice."
In the next few weeks, he said, users will be able to download a new
version of the Google Search app for iPhone and iPad that will let users receive
notifications across their devices.
"So if you tell your Nexus 7, 'OK Google. Remind me to buy olive oil at
Safeway,' when you walk into the store with your iPhone, you’ll get a reminder,"
he wrote. "We’ll also show you Google Now notifications so you’re not late to
your cooking class."
Singhal noted that the changes come as Google celebrates its 15th birthday.
Back in 1998, he wrote, you'd "type in some keywords and get 10 blue links to
websites that had those words." With Thursday's announcement, search — and
Google — has come a long way since then.

I know it’s feasible to produce the intellectual argument
Over the past year, I’ve utilised Windows 8 on more than 20 distinctive
PCs. Over the previous 3 months, I’ve upgraded a dozen or so of these devices to
the Windows eight.1 Preview and, much more recently, towards the Windows eight.1
RTM code.
Now, when I say made use of, I’m not counting devices exactly where I had some minutes of hands-on time at a tradeshow. That total includes devices I spent excellent hands-on time with, for a minimum of days and typically weeks or months. In every single case, it was long adequate to acquire a solid overview in addition to a feeling for the relative strengths and weaknesses of an extremely wide range of devices.
I’ve also spent a lot of time functioning with end users at all talent levels, listening to their feedback and assisting them adjust towards the from time to time steep Windows 8.x studying curve. Within this post and also the accompanying image gallery, I want to share a number of those experiences and also the lessons I’ve discovered.
Very first, the definition of a Computer has expended significantly in the previous year. The Pc industry’s sales may be dropping, however the total is still a large number-every month, OEMs sell tens of millions of Windows-based devices. Increasingly, those devices are blurring the lines between what we made use of to get in touch with a Computer and what we at the moment get in touch with a tablet. As far more hybrid styles reach the market place, we’re seeing an extremely distinct answer to the question, “What is usually a Pc, anyway?”
Second, Windows and its ecosystem have evolved tremendously inside the previous year too. There are various far more third-party apps currently than there were a year ago, such as a new wave of apps that the common public will not see till Windows 8.1 is released in October. The new Mail app, as an example, is actually a profound improvement on its Windows eight predecessor.
That still may well not be sufficient evolution to satisfy some critics. It could possibly take an additional two rounds of refinements and new attributes to have Windows 8.x for the “good enough” level for a number of people. (Good news for them: Windows 7 is years from its expiration date.)
I get the frustration more than Windows 8. I know loads of people who rejected Windows 8 as a result of a disappointing and confusing initial encounter, even soon after creating a good-faith effort to adapt. Soon after spending 3 months with the Windows 8.1 Preview as well as a couple weeks with the Windows 8.1 RTM code, I can let you know it does indeed soften the rough edges of Windows 8 on hardware made for Windows 7 or earlier. But these rough edges are still there.
PCs made for Windows 7 are extremely distinctive from these made for Windows 8.x. Actually, Windows eight.1 definitely doesn’t make sense until you start off utilizing it on hardware that was built using a touch-first interface as its purpose for becoming. The causes why Windows 8.1 works the way it does come into even sharper focus after you switch between multiple touchscreen devices with apps, settings, personalization, and data files syncing amongst them.
I've been covering Windows for more than 20 years, and I cannot don't forget any other release exactly where applying the new OS on new hardware is so vital to possessing a decent knowledge. On older PCs, adding Windows 8.x makes to get a mixed bag, when it comes to the general expertise. On mobile devices applying modern hardware (especially 4th Generation Intel Core CPUs, aka Haswell), the variations are profound. The devices I'm utilizing most frequently as of late can boot from a cold begin in much less than 15 seconds and resume from sleep instantaneously. They get far greater battery life than equivalent models that had been built just two years ago, and functionality is commonly light-years superior, if only because of Moore’s Law.
However the most significant ingredient for mobile devices, in my opinion, is really a touchscreen. Around the multi-monitor desktop I’m working with to create this post, I don’t require a touchscreen-I’ve mastered the keyboard and mouse shortcuts, plus the Logitech T400 Touch Mouse has adequate gesture help to manage most scrolling (horizontal and vertical). But for every little thing else, if it does not have a touchscreen, I am not interested.
When I sat down and wrote down the names and model numbers of all of the Windows 8.x devices I’ve utilised over the past year, I found that they fit neatly into these seven categories:
The first generation of Ultrabooks shipped a couple years after Windows 7. The contrast with the finest hardware from just a number of years earlier, in 2009 and 2010, was eye-opening. I owned and utilised two of the greatest examples from that first wave of Ultrabooks: the Samsung Series 9 (which was my wife’s most important Pc for roughly a year) plus the ASUS ZenBook UX31E (which was my primary mobile personal computer for 18 months). They’re still amazingly light and responsive…or so I’m told by their new owners. They’ve been replaced in our household by newer, lighter, more quickly models that contain touchscreens.
I know it’s feasible to produce the intellectual argument that touchscreens do not belong on portable devices which have a permanently attached keyboard and trackpad. But that theory does not survive make contact with using the genuine world. Various individuals will make use of the touchscreen to varying degrees, but I have but to find out any one who didn’t obtain some set of actions which might be just a lot easier to accomplish through direct manipulation than having a trackpad. Plus the "gorilla arms" argument turns out to become a non-factor windows 7 professional retail version on notebooks. In fact, I guarantee you that just after working with a touchscreen device for even several days, you'll pick up your old notebook and touch the screen, expecting it do a thing. The Haswell-equipped Ultrabook I am currently working with is amongst the best-engineered devices I’ve ever owned.

And The Winner Of TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2013 Is… Layer!
After three days and some truly incredible pitches from each of our 30
Battlefield competitors, the time has finally come to crown a Disrupt
Battlefield champion. Competition among this year’s pack of six finalists —
Dryft, Fates Forever, Layer, Soil IQ, Regalii, and Cota by Ossia — was as stiff
as ever, but even with a batch as strong as this, only one startup can take home
the Disrupt Cup.
Each of the companies took to the stage earlier this week in a bid to prove their worthiness, and to top it all off this year’s batch of six had to present once more in front of our final panel of judges that includes Michael Arrington of CrunchFund (and TechCrunch founder), Roelof Botha of Sequoia Capital, Chris Dixon of Founder Collective, David Lee of SV Angel, Marissa Mayer of Yahoo!, and Keith Rabois of Khosla Ventures. Needless to say, this process isn’t exactly for the faint of heart.
The judges spent a considerable amount of time deliberating backstage, and they’ve just now come to a decision. Without any further ado, meet your TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2013 Battlefield winner.

Layer, founded by Tomaž Štolfa and Ron Palmeri, is a communications
platform that can be added to any mobile app by adding fewer than 10 lines of
code into the mix. Once that Layer code snippet has been carefully plopped into
place, users will be able to send text, voice, and video messages, and share
files across different applications.
The grand Layer vision involves support for web apps, too, but for now the team is going to focus on releasing an SDK for iOS and Android developers to tinker with. And what of their scheme to keep developers around and dependent on Layer? Early adopters will be able to deploy Layer for free, but will have to pay some modest cloud infrastructure fees once they really start picking up steam.
You can read more of our Layer coverage here.
Disclosure: One of Layer’s seed investors is CrunchFund, an early-stage VC fund cofounded by Michael Arrington, who also founded TechCrunch.

Best Nexus 7 Accessories
Asus outdid itself with the new Google Nexus 7, which is leaps and bounds
ahead of its still-very-good predecessor. The 7-inch tablet is faster, available
in higher capacity versions, and packs a gorgeous, much higher-resolution screen
that exceeds 1080p (1,920 by 1,200 pixels). It's also slimmer and more
attractive than the previous Nexus 7. Naturally, this means you have to get some
new accessories.
Bluetooth accessories and Android apps remain pretty universal, so you can keep your old apps (and get any new ones that are optimized for Android 4.3), keyboards, speakers, and headphones. Cases are a bit trickier, and that's where you might run into some problems when ordering online. When shopping for a new case or cover, look for one that says it's for the "New Nexus 7" or the "2013 Nexus 7." If you get a case made for the first Nexus 7, it won't fit on your new tablet.
Cases
The Nexus 7 doesn't have as many cases as the fashion plate iPad, but there are still plenty of choices for you to protect and accessorize your tablet. Computer Shopper's list of the top 10 cases for the new Nexus 7 run the gamut from simple plastic sleeves to leather-bound folios to Apple Smart Cover-like foldable stands. Highlights include the MoKo Ultra-Slim Lightweight Smart Shell Stand Case (which looks like something made for the iPad), the DODOcase Folio for Nexus 7 (which looks like something made for the cast of Mad Men), and the Waterfield City Slicker Tablet Case (which looks like something made for that guy you keep seeing at Starbucks). Pick your case or cover based on the sort of protection, style, and functionality you want for your tablet.
Apps
The Nexus 7 runs stock Android 4.3, which means it can handle nearly any Android app you can throw at it. Because the Google Play Store is a massive library of software for your tablet, it's hard to pick which apps are optimized for tablets, which apps were recently updated, and which apps are actually good. Our list of The Best Android Apps can help you narrow down your choices, even if there are still a lot from which to pick. Be sure to update all of your Google-specific features and apps (like Google Drive, Google Now, and Google Keep) to make sure all of your personal information and media is available on your tablet instantly.
Speakers and Headphones
Because it uses Bluetooth, the Nexus 7 works with plenty of wireless audio products, including speakers like the Bose SoundLink Mini and earphones like the Plantronics BackBeat Go 2. Besides those two Editors' Choice picks, our lists of the best wireless speakers and best wireless headphones include plenty of other solid choices.
Other Accessories
With all of the obvious accessories out of the way, there are two more you can pick up that can add a lot of functionailty to your Nexus 7. The Google Chromecast lets you stream online media from your Nexus 7 to your HDTV, and while it's currently limited in what it supports, its $35 price tag is just right for adding some useful functionality to your tablet. Finally, theLogitech K810 Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard lets you use your tablet like a mini-notebook.

However, if you dislike the modern UI
Which OS is most effective for gaming? Windows 7 or Windows eight? There’s
an abundance of heated debate on the subject, however the answer is pretty
straightforward.
There are couple of technical variations involving the two operating systems exactly where games are concerned, and any game that may run on Windows 7 should really run on Windows 8. See our Windows 8 evaluation.
As a consequence of the truth that Windows 8’s new ‘modern user interface’ supports apps, some casual games are offered only on Windows 8 because Windows 7 can not run these apps. See also: what is the difference among Windows eight & Windows 7?
If you’re choosing a new PC or laptop and can’t decide whether to go for Windows 7 or 8, then from a gaming perspective it doesn’t really matter windows 7 ultimate activation key which you choose. From a future-proofing point of view, Windows eight is the obvious choice. However, if you dislike the modern UI then bear in mind that the imminent Windows eight.1 update includes an option exactly where you can bypass the new Start screen and boot straight to the old desktop.
You’ll probably want to install a replacement start menu, such as Start 8 or Pokki, given that Windows eight.1 still doesn’t have a ‘proper’ start menu (unless you’re happy to use the Start screen, of course).
Performance-wise, we haven’t seen any distinction amongst Windows 7 and 8 when it comes to frame rates, so a given game will run at the same speed around the same hardware regardless of whether you have Windows 7 or Windows eight installed.
If you’re interested in the technical variations, Windows 7 has only partial support for Direct3D 11.1, which is part of DirectX. Windows 8 has full support.
However, while it’s possible that game developers will use some features that aren’t supported in Windows 7, it’s very unlikely that you’ll notice the distinction. The game will still run in Windows 7, but the graphics quality might be slightly reduced.

SF Chronicle said to demolish pay wall after four months
A little more than four months after the San Francisco Chronicle began
charging online readers for some content, the newspaper's pay wall experiment
has reportedly come to an end.
The newspaper announced in March that it would place certain "premium" stories and columns behind a pay wall, charging readers a $12 monthly subscription fee for access to all the digital content on SFChronicle.com, which is separate from the newspaper's free SFGate.com. News of the pay wall's impending collapse was broken Tuesday morning on Twitter by The Verge's Casey Newton, a former reporter at CNET and the Chronicle:
Staffers were informed of the move during a meeting Monday afternoon at the newspaper's downtown San Francisco office, according to the SFWeekly. Oddly, SFChronicle.com subscribers will still have the option of paying for access to the premium-content Web site even though it will all now be freely available at SFGate.com, the free weekly alternative newspaper reported.
CNET has contacted the Chronicle for comment and will update this report when we learn more.
Charging readers for access to online content is a growing trend in the newspaper business, which for the past decade has been scrambling for profits amid sagging print advertising revenue and declining circulations. In June, The Washington Post erected a pay wall, joining other national newspapers in charging for online news access.
Though unusual, the demolition of a newspaper pay wall isn't unheard of. In 2007, The New York Times dismantled its TimesSelect Web service after two years but eventually replaced it with another subscription plan that gives readers access to 20 articles a month free of charge. Newspapers are also known to lower pay walls temporarily during times of natural disaster.

The net impact is the fact that it's a lot easier to remain
When it appears like Microsoft is putting the finishing touches on Windows
8.1, a couple of reports say the release date office 2010 professional plus key continues to be a couple months
away.
Each ZDNet and the Verge claim that Windows 8.1 will launch in October, not only for existing Windows 8 PCs, but for new computers operating the updated operating program. The duo were the first to report on Windows 8.1's (then referred to as Windows Blue) existence, several months ago.
Thoughts you, this is not a delay, as Microsoft has never confirmed a release date for Windows eight.1. The corporation has only mentioned that it would release the software to Computer makers (a procedure recognized as RTM) in August. Both reports say Microsoft continues to be on track.
But as ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley explains, Microsoft may perhaps be holding back the actual launch for any couple of factors: 1st, Windows 8.1 is reportedly really buggy, even for a test develop, so the extra time will let Microsoft to clean issues up by means of computer software updates for new Pc buyers. Second, releasing each the update and new Windows 8.1 devices simultaneously could possibly build a bigger splash, amounting to a “launch event” for the additional user-friendly version of Microsoft's operating method.
Windows eight.1 involves a variety of concessions for desktop customers, too as new capabilities for the modern interface. Customers will be able to boot straight for the desktop, disable modern-style “hot corners” and access essential desktop functions by right-clicking around the newly-restored Begin button. The modern interface incorporates key improvements to built-in apps, the ability to use three apps side-by-side, overhauled Bing search and more. The net impact is the fact that it's a lot easier to remain on the desktop if you'd like, but not unthinkable to switch towards the contemporary UI.
If Microsoft manages to launch the update in October, it'll fall about the one-year anniversary of Windows 8. That is a large adjust for Windows, which usually releases important updates when every couple of years, but it is a vital adjust as Microsoft tries to maintain up with Apple and Google. No matter whether you really like or hate the operating program, there is no doubt that Microsoft's switch to a speedy release cycle is undoubtedly bearing fruit.

Apple Says Its Developer Site Was Hacked
Apple told software developers that its website had been hacked and some
information about them may have been stolen.
In response to the attack, which took place Thursday, said it is “completely overhauling” its developer systems, updating software and rebuilding its database.
The Silicon Valley company, in an email sent to developers, said an intruder attempted to secure personal information from the developer website. Apple said “sensitive” personal information on the site is encrypted and cannot be accessed, and that information associated with customers of its products was not affected.
“However, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed,” the company wrote.
The company said it took the site down Thursday and has been working around the clock since then in response to the attack. “In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue,” the email said.
Apple did not say how many developers might have been affected by the attack. But large numbers of people work on creating software for its popular iPhones and iPads as well as its Mac computers. The company says there are 275,000 registered developers for its mobile devices.
The Cupertino, Calif., company’s developer connection website contains pre-release software, technology for testing new programs and information about how to code applications for its hardware. The company is currently completing work on new versions of its iOS mobile operating system and its Mac software.
Apple had not previously explained why the website became inaccessible Thursday. Some online publications reported that developers had said their passwords had been reset.
Apple had largely been spared the high-profile break-ins that have afflicted some other companies. Sony was attacked in 2011, for example, causing more than 100 million of its customer’s accounts to be compromised. Hacking groups, including the loosely organized Internet political group Anonymous, attacked the systems of various other companies including Nintendo, and government affiliates and agencies.
Apple assured developers that it is “completely overhauling” its developer systems, updating software and working on its databases.
“In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.”
Apple declined to provide any information about who attacked them, nor whether it was working with any government agencies or outside investigative teams.
“The website that was breached is not associated with any customer information,” Tom Neumayr, an Apple spokesman said. “Additionally, customer information is securely encrypted.”
David Barnard, founder of App Cubby, a company that makes apps for Apple’s devices, said having the site down is an inconvenience. But he said he is not worried about the lost data, since he uses a UPS mailbox for his address and a unique password that could not be used to tap into other sites.
One potential worry is if the attacker got access to his company’s bank account data, “but from what I understand that data is stored in a completely separate system and was not compromised,” Barnard said.

Now that people have a choice of devices
Within the late 1990s, a single technology business became so unfathomably
wealthy and powerful?aand so hellbent on dominating not just its own industry
but a massive and swiftly developing new one?athat the U.S. government dragged
the enterprise into court and threatened to break it up more than anti-trust
violations.
The case was settled, plus the company, Microsoft, agreed to play nicer. But it turned out that the planet had practically nothing to worry about. As often happens inside the technology business, what has definitely destroyed Microsoft's choke hold on the worldwide personal computing marketplace over the previous 15 years hasn't been a legal threat but a market place shift.
Just when it looked like Microsoft's vision on the Pc as the center of the tech globe would lead to the creation on the world's very first trillion-dollar organization, the world wide web came along. And it washed more than the Pc sector like a tidal wave swallowing a pond.
When it comes to market place worth, Microsoft's loss of energy has lengthy been visible: The stock continues to be trading at about half the level it hit at the peak of your tech boom 13 years ago. The effects around the actual Computer market fundamentals have taken longer to develop, but they are also now crystal clear. Microsoft's ?°Windows monopoly?± hasn't been a lot destroyed as rendered irrelevant. That since, due to the explosion of Internet-based cloud computing and smartphones, tablets, along with other mobile gadgets, the after all-powerful platform of the desktop operating technique has now been lowered to tiny more than a device driver. Provided that your gadget can connect towards the Web and run some apps, it doesn't matter what operating system you use.
3 charts genuinely bring dwelling the challenges that Microsoft and also other PC-powered giants like Intel, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard face in adapting to this new Internet-driven globe. Initial, look at global device shipments. For the two decades through 2005, the individual laptop was the only game in town, promoting about 200 million units a year. But then smartphones and tablets came along. And now they dwarf the Pc market.
This shift in private computing device adoption, meanwhile, has radically diminished the energy with the Windows operating system platform. As lately as three years ago, Microsoft's Windows was nonetheless completely dominant?athe platform ran 70% of personal computing devices. Now, due to the rise of Google's Android and Apple's iOS, Windows' international share has been reduce in half, to about 30 percent. A lot more remarkably, Android is now a bigger platform than Windows.
Lastly, and most not too long ago, this chart from analyst Horace Dediu of Asymco illustrates that the Pc organization is no longer just obtaining dwarfed by the explosion of smartphone and tablet sales ... it has now truly begun to shrink. Now that people have a choice of devices, it turns out that a full-blown personal personal computer is generally not by far the most cost-effective, practical, or simplest solution to do what a user desires to do. As an alternative to being the center of your individual computing world, in other words, the Pc is becoming a specialized office-productivity device.
The news for Microsoft is not all undesirable. The company has been really productive at moving from a "unit-driven" sales model to a licensing model, in which companies pay a fee per user per year as an alternative to getting a perpetual license with every single new pc. And Microsoft's Workplace franchise continues to be extraordinarily profitable and dominant, in element due to the fact Google, Apple, and also other much more Internet-centric corporations have created so tiny investment in their competitive solutions.
But only 15 years immediately after the government went right after Microsoft for anti-trust violations, the concept that the company ever had a "monopoly" on something is difficult to even have an understanding of. Along with the outlook for Windows, as well as the classic Pc company normally, appears sure to obtain even worse going forward.

The issue in the unapproved windows was taken up this past Tuesday
“The old windows had been falling apart and had been a hazard to the
community,” said Hector Cruz, who has co-owned the three-story building on 5577
N. Figueroa St. in conjunction with his mother given that the previous 5
years.
“They had been really costly to replace,” Cruz stated, adding that he got a $12,000 estimate for the repairs and replacement of eight with the original windows that he ended up altering. “And that’s not even providing us a cushion of what’s to come,” he mentioned.
In installing a great deal less costly windows, Cruz stated he took a leaf from the historic windows that were replaced with fixed-glass ones about a quarter-century ago in the former workplace of ex-Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg. Also located in the Mason Building, which has 19,000 square feet of floor space, Goldberg’s one-time workplace now houses the Superior Girl Dinette Vietnamese fusion food restaurant.

The inspector told Cruz that because the Highland Park Masonic Building is around the National Registry of Historic Locations, he is expected to have permission from the Los Angeles Historical Preservation Overlay Zone before undertaking any work that modifications the building’s architectural integrity.
“The last point I anticipated is for the community to send an inspector rather than coming and telling me what are the initial methods I should really have taken to replace the windows,” Cruz mentioned, adding: “I’ve had Autry Museum meetings, Neighborhood Council meetings in the building-I’ve supported everybody.”
In accordance with Cruz, it was Highland Park historian and Highland Park Heritage Trust member Charlie Fisher who allegedly reported him to the Division of Building and Security. A contact by Patch to Highland Park Heritage Trust requesting an interview with Fisher went unreturned.
Cruz mentioned it’s not that he is not concerned about conservation problems surrounding his building, which was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1984. “We try to balance security and responsibility with our price range,” he stated.
His response to critics who accuse him of negligence is that “if you’re so concerned in regards to the windows, why do not you get a grant or funding to replace them?” Cruz stated, adding that home owners which include him can “hardly make it by in these tough [economic] instances.”
The large query for Cruz, he said, was “do you retain the windows mainly because they look nice or do you modify them due to the fact they’re falling apart and are a security hazard?”
The issue in the unapproved windows was taken up this past Tuesday by the Highland Park-Garvanza Historical Preservation Overlay Zone at its bimonthly board meeting in Ramona Hall, Cruz said, adding that he was notified in regards to the meeting but didn’t attend.
The Mason Creating could have lost its original windows, but there’s nevertheless a window of opportunity to have them back.
“We’ve saved each of the small pieces of glass,” said Cruz. “So if something significant would take place, I’d be most content to replace them.”

Xobni Was Acquired For More Than $60 Million
So email management startup Xobni was acquired by Yahoo today, the company
officially announced on its blog. Initial reports said the company was acquired
for “upwards of $30 million” but TechCrunch has learned that total consideration
for the deal will be more than twice that amount, at more than $60 million
range.
Founded in 2006, Xobni raised about $42 million over the years, as it tried to reinvent the way email was done. The company’s last round of funding came in February of last year, and investors over the years have included First Round Capital, Khosla Ventures, RRE Ventures, Baseline Ventures, RBC Venture Partners, Relay Ventures, Cisco, Atomico, as well as a number of angels.
A source with knowledge of the acquisition disputes the $30 million figure, saying total consideration is double what had been reported. Update: We’ve had another source verify this, and say that the price was actually closer to $70 million.
A price in the high $60 million range (including earnouts and other considerations) isn’t a fantastic return for its investors, but at least the company wasn’t acquired for less than it had raised. While the company didn’t get to be as big as the team or investors might have hoped, they also didn’t get rocked in the transaction, as has been suggested.
We’re still hoping to talk to both Yahoo and Xobni about the deal and how the startup will fit into Yahoo’s products and culture. It’s likely that Yahoo will be able to incorporate some of its technology into its own mail products as a way to improve them.
We’ve also reached to Yahoo and Xobni about terms of the deal. Yahoo says that it’s not commenting on the financial terms, and a representative from Xobni hasn’t responded to our request yet.

Two new Bing apps demonstrate up in 8.one
Microsoft has taken loads of grief in excess of Windows eight. The
corporate got down to develop software that could operate equally well on
standard keyboard- and mouse-driven personal personal computers along with on
tablets that are predominantly suited for contact. But numerous folks imagined
this radical new running system was bewildering, if not borderline
schizophrenic. Desktops functioning Home windows eight have not precisely been
greeted with open up arms.
Previous week Microsoft launched a preview variation of Windows eight.one, the main significant update to Home windows 8 as well as company's original attempt to clean factors more than. The software is offered now for anyone to test, but maintain in mind that a preview is just that, a preview. Certainly, Microsoft cautions there are pitfalls to downloading eight.1 at this time. It is also untimely to complete a proper review of Windows eight.1, so contemplate this column a preview in addition. What I am able to say following a few days with a Area Pro loaner pill is usually that Microsoft has additional a number of satisfying touches. No matter whether will probably be adequate to entice the hesitant masses remains for being noticed.
Perhaps the largest alter you may detect would be the return of the common Start button, situated in "Desktop" mode in its customary area with the base still left corner on the taskbar. People who experienced lamented the missing Begin button should not go gaga ?a clicking or tapping within the new Begin button returns you to the default Home windows eight Start out atmosphere, generally known as the trendy UI. Which is in which you'll find the vibrant rectangular and sq. tiles, some with live info (temperature, shares, e-mail, etc.) which have arrive at outline the fresher Windows interface on desktops and smartphones, and i'm betting you will shell out lots of time in that atmosphere.
Seems to me Microsoft isn't going to want you to locate the former possibility, nevertheless, mainly because I'd to ask the corporate in which to discover it. (Right-click about the taskbar in Desktop, select properties, then navigation tab, and choose "Go to your desktop as a substitute of Start off once i sign in.")
You've got various solutions to customise the fashionable interface. It is possible to team icons for identical applications and give that cluster of apps a name. It is possible to push and keep your finger versus a tile to resize it or unpin it with the Start off screen.
Microsoft has also additional a Personalize selection less than Options for selecting backgrounds and choosing colors ?a you may sample distinctive hues by dragging slider controls. You get to Configurations by swiping in from your ideal, summoning what are often known as "charms," controls for hunting, sharing plus much more.
By signing in with a Microsoft account, whatsoever configurations you identify with your computer can abide by you throughout other Windows products, such as telephones and Xbox consoles. The stuff you save over a Windows 8.one Pc ?a photos, documents and also other documents ?a is often saved on Microsoft's cloud-based SkyDrive.
Within Home windows eight.one, you could also exhibit up to four applications around the display at anyone time and resize each open up window. Having a 2nd observe, you are able to double the volume of open applications, but you can expect to require a substantial adequate high-resolution monitor. On my check Floor I could see only two open up applications concurrently.
Form in the query this kind of as LA Dodger outfielder Yasiel Puig, and you will see a handsome research end result, a format with images and movies in the rookie feeling plus a link to his Wikipedia entry. Swipe sideways to view other articles or blog posts about "Puigmania," such as thumbnail views of the Websites from which all those articles originate. Properly finished.
A no-less-attractive look for structure appeared once i typed Alicia Keys' identify. As well as pics, her delivery date and a website link to her Wikipedia bio, I was able to enjoy several of her full-length top rated tracks proper on the place, streamed without spending a dime via Xbox Audio. I could also enjoy tunes movies suitable then and there.
Bing search performs very well for travel, as well ?a a common look for on Las Vegas brought up rather photographs, temperature, existing sights and easy links to produce hotel reservations.
Research isn't really limited towards the Website. You can simply look for throughout Word files and other files within the Computer system or data files stored on SkyDrive (Microsoft gives you upgrade to windows 8 pro pack seven cost-free gigabytes of SkyDrive storage).
Two new Bing apps demonstrate up in 8.one. The foodie-oriented Bing Food & Drink app is a repository for recipes. Bing Health & Fitness sports an exercise and diet tracker and includes a symptom checker for these things that might ail you.
Home windows Store. The Windows Store within 8.1 gets a good-looking makeover, much too. Microsoft surfaces apps it thinks you will be interested in, dependent on previous purchases or ratings. The joint is approaching 100,000 apps since the launch of Windows 8. Among those Microsoft announced at its recent Build conference are upcoming Home windows applications from Facebook, Flipboard as well as NFL.
Windows 8.1 also now pre-loads a Reading List app for saving a story you want to read later that you appear across on the Net via Internet Explorer. It only operates in the fashionable UI for now (not Desktop) and, in my view, requires a single click as well a lot of to preserve an article you want to read later.
Closer to its general availability I'll do a far more comprehensive evaluation of Home windows 8.one. For now I'll say that while it won't address every shortcoming of Windows eight, it pushes Microsoft in the appropriate direction.

For now I'll say that while it won't address every shortcoming of Windows eight, it pushes Microsoft in the appropriate direction.

iOS 7 Inspires Critics To Take Matters Into Their Own Hands
After Apple showed off its new design for the iPhone's operating system on
Monday, tech writers and designers took to their keyboards to complain. Their
problem with iOS 7 starts right at the surface: they don't like how the new app
icons look. And now, we might have an explanation as to why.
The new icons are brightly colored and simple, a huge departure from Apple's old dark, detailed icons. They were mostly designed by Apple's marketing team, not by its designers, before being handed off to the design team for the final touches, The Next Web reports.
The lack of cohesion doesn't end there. "We’ve also been hearing that there wasn’t a whole lot of communication between the various teams behind say, Mail and Safari," The Next Web's Matthew Panzarino reports. "And that there were multiple teams inside each group that were competing with various designs, leading to what some see as inconsistencies in icon design."
Designers have been complaining about everything from the icons' colors to their inconsistency of design. Ben Moss of Webdesigner Depot found the icons' shapes to be troubling. "The singularly biggest issue — apart from the color — is that so many of the icons are clearly intended to be round, but are crammed inside rounded rectangles," writes Moss. "Apple set out with good intentions, but their fear of profit margins kept them from designing something truly exciting."
Designers aren't just expressing their dislike of the new icons, they're also taking matters into their own hands and designing their own. One Tumblr blog called "Designers Complaining" is collected laments about iOS 7 from Twitter. Another called "Jony Ive Redesigns Things" offers a tongue-in-cheek critic of Ive, Apple's design head, by redesigning other things in iOS 7's style. "Nothing shouts bad design more than design that shouts," Sasha Agapov, creator of "Jony Ive Redesigns Things," told the Huffington Post.
Designer Sameer Ahmed also felt compelled to create his own versions of the icons because he found the new designs so aggravating. "I had to recreate them," Ahmed said. "I couldn't look at the icons apple created."
Not everyone dislikes the new icons, though. Anthony Wing Kosner at Forbes called the new icons "subtly dimensional and exquisitely modern."
Similar to how the uproar over design changes at Facebook eventually dies down and don't cause users to flee, Apple fanboys may get used to iOS 7 after it's release in the fall. Or Apple could heed the critics and change the operating system's look. Sources told The Next Web that the design is a "work in progress."

Without having the economical enhance
In truth, you shouldn't be at-all amazed via the practice. Bloomberg
Businessweek's Ashlee Vance allow slip in an posting this past 7 days that
Microsoft is spending builders "$100,000 or more" to build apps for its Windows
Phone platform ¨C a beautiful incentive, positive, for those whose budgets are
as well constrained or engineering employees is too fast paced to port a

Nevertheless, it is really significant to make clear that Microsoft isn't performing nearly anything new, as Vance's report ¨C as well as the subsequent follow-ups written by other journalistic entities ¨C may well point out. Microsoft has become shelling out builders for their notice, talent, and app-creation skills for some time now, along with the figure goes a lot higher than $100,000.

excited about. But numbers and decimals make us just as happy, so join us for

OEM suppliers may get Home windows 8
I initial obtained wind of Windows Blue from my contacts about four months
ago and possess due to the fact composed quite a few PCMag columns with regards
to the OS update. As I have defined right before, Windows eight.one, as it can
be now officially known as, extends this new touch-based OS to tablets while in
the 7- to eleven.4-inch selection. It is also being used on what are identified
as ultramobile laptops, or laptops that precisely use an Intel Atom processor or
a new low-voltage chip from AMD referred to as Temash.
The push to add Windows eight to smaller sized tablets arrives as no shock as this really is a industry that Microsoft has dismissed right up until now, while tablets within the 7- to 8-inch variety will symbolize as much as sixty five per cent of all tablets offered globally beginning this calendar year. That's due to the fact these more compact tablets are inclined to generally be cheaper-some provide for under $150 previously and many others are anticipated to fall to $129 with the vacations. These smaller tablets are evidently being used for written content use, not productiveness, but apparently Microsoft also thinks that tablets while in the 10.1-inch selection will also be media intake equipment and do not cross about to productivity.
But there is a thing odd about Microsoft's solution to tablets and Windows eight.one is notable for the couple of explanations. Very first, it could possibly be used on lesser tablets. Second, when applied on tablets or laptops that activity Intel's Atom chip or AMD's Temash processor, the OEM price for Home windows eight.one is about $30 in comparison with its rate on laptops and PCs with far more highly effective processors where the license fee ranges from $65 to $85 for each device.
But here is the twist: Microsoft has made the decision that on tablets up to ten.one inches managing Home windows eight.1 and utilizing these lower-end processors from Intel and AMD, it'll throw Microsoft Office in without cost. If I am not mistaken, Business is productiveness software program. So the business seems for being stating that tablets around ten.1 inches are mostly intake products, not utilised for productivity, nonetheless it is providing them Office environment without spending a dime. Go figure! To get good, this probably has a thing to complete with obtaining new customers common with Business office and attempting to maneuver them to the cloud membership of Office environment in some unspecified time in the future. However, about the surface area it continue to appears to be just like a unusual move.
As I said above, OEM suppliers may get Home windows 8.one for around $30 so long as they use these new low-voltage chips from Intel and AMD and can be implemented on screens from 7 inches as superior as thirteen.three inches. Even so, these devices are evidently for productiveness so Microsoft will not bundle Place of work for free. Once the OEM suppliers listened to which they could get Home windows Blue for $30 whenever they used Atom or Temash and could apply it to contact screens around thirteen.three inches, they jumped with the opportunity to make lower price tag ultramobile laptops. Even though they realize that making touch-based laptops inside the $399 to $549 variety is considerably dangerous as it could try to eat into the product sales of far more costly ultrabooks, all OEMs have nonetheless embraced this opportunity and will soon present such ultramobile laptops.
These lower-end ultramobile laptops are definitely developed to go just after the Chromebook market place which is selecting up. In reality, NPD analysts explained that Chromebooks comprised 25 per cent of all laptops sold in retail under $300 past month. Our contacts at a community retailer notify us they get 12 Chromebooks a week which these are all marketed out within 48 several hours. While these ultramobiles could be priced in a $200 to $250 high quality about Chromebooks, they are doing have full Home windows application compatibility and other people which have invested while in the Windows atmosphere over the years could obtain this additional price tag tolerable. Also observe that customers inform us the highest price tag they can fork out for the notebook or Computer is $599.
An rising trend indicates that men and women favor low-cost laptops. Our study proceeds to substantiate that customers can manage about eighty per cent in their computing demands on a tablet plus the remaining twenty p.c should still be done with a laptop. As a result, when contemplating a different Pc, they possibly choose to extend the lifestyle of their current design or acquire a cheap model knowing that it's only essential for approximately 20 % with the factors they do, this sort of as house funds, taking care of media collections, or other heavy-lifting tasks.
The industry's major worry is always that these low-cost, touch-based laptops not just turn out to be wildly well-known, but which they establish what we phone "the new standard." Because of this though we're going to nevertheless sell laptops over $599, the change in buyer demand from customers will improve the quantity offered at reduced price points. The profit margin on these less costly laptops is much smaller sized than on highly-priced equipment and if they choose off, they could diminish the need for higher-priced laptops, which have been the bread and butter from the Computer sector for decades.
Home windows eight.one will basically be an important edition of Windows 8 as a result of this huge press with lower-cost, touch-based laptops. I feel which they will probably be a massive strike this back-to-school and getaway season. A more tricky query to answer is whether Home windows 8.1 on small tablets will discover any desire. It truly is up in opposition to iOS and Android, which both have app outlets boasting in excess of 800,000 apps. And while we could see some 7-inch Home windows eight.one tablets as low as $249 because of the holidays, Windows-based tablets could have an uphill climb offered the existing levels of competition.

Windows 8.1 'boot to desktop' rumor: Wishful thinking?
A Windows 8.1 option to boot to desktop? That seductive rumor has been
making the rounds over the weekend.
What could be a reflection of wishful thinking, a post at WinBeta (via Neowin), cites a Russian-language Web site as the source.
Apparently, there is Windows 8.1 code that disables the Metro Start Screen and sends you "to the desktop automatically."
That is a feature that more than a few Windows 8 users would undoubtedly take advantage of since the tiled Metro screen is of questionable utility for some.
Market researcher IDC, among others, has been making the case over the past month or so that this can be confusing to the average consumer, who is not used to a touch-centric Windows interface, and frustrating for more seasoned users who spend all their time in the Windows 7-like desktop mode.
And IDC has gone so far to say that is one of the principal reasons that Windows 8 PCs aren't selling in the numbers expected.
There are workarounds that can send you to the desktop but that just isn't the same as Microsoft sanctioning that feature.
Dream on? We should know more by June when Microsoft holds its Build conference.

I won't deny it, factors are terrible in Computer land at the moment. The
IDC is reporting the biggest fall in Computer system shipments for the reason
that agency started off tracking these types of points in 1994: a 13.9% decrease
12 months about 12 months and far steeper slides for particular person
companies. The primary quarter of 2013 is really a stinker for PCs. It is the
reality. What may well not be, nevertheless, is everyone’s insistence on pinning
this on Windows 8.
“At this issue, unfortunately, it appears obvious that the Windows 8 launch don't just failed to supply a good improve for the Computer sector, but seems to obtain slowed the industry," reported the IDC’s Bob O'Donnell inside the scathing report.
That quotation resulted in rather considerably anyone saying that Windows eight is killing PCs product sales. The truth is, headlines like this “Windows 8 Killing Laptop Sales” and “Research company IDC: Computer system product sales plunge as Home windows 8 flops” were being not uncommon.
IDC didn’t lay all of the blame on Home windows eight. It famous a decrease in netbook product sales (remember people?), Dell and HP’s difficulties, a lack of new markets during the US, whitebox technique consolidation and public-sector getting constraints in China.
There actually was scarcely 1 bit of good information within the report. Apple suffered significantly less than other makers, but still saw a Computer system cargo decline (largely, IDC said, as a consequence of the growth in iPad product sales).
Genuinely? A launched stopped men and women from obtaining new PCs? Though quite a few individuals and firms can nonetheless opt to buy Home windows 7 units (and/or the Home windows 7 computer software), all of them pulled up shorter mainly because they have been scared of the very unique Home windows eight?
Windows 8 is different. The Home windows Style and design (formerly Metro) interface is really a secret to some. There’s no “Start” button and it is is really designed for a touch practical experience, while it works just high-quality that has a mouse.
For starters, I do like Windows 8 and use it each working day. It runs all Windows 7 program and gives me an exceptionally regular Windows knowledge if I want it. The “Desktop” remains to be there, immediately after all. Plus, when you choose a moment to take a look at Home windows eight, you quickly notice that the Start out Menu is currently bigger than at any time: It's the Windows Design/Metro Interface.
Nearly each individual Home windows update has, no less than to begin with, been considered a failure. Some, like Vista, and Windows ME, have been. But even the successes like Windows ninety five, 98 and Windows 7 were being initially judged improperly - right until they turned ubiquitous. I’m not arguing that Home windows 8 will sooner or later do a similar. It’s way too early to understand needless to say.
Continue to for the people who do not know, right here how it is effective: Microsoft launches a fresh OS and nerds and admirer boys line approximately get their fingers on it. Everyone else steers obvious, at the least for quite a while. Customers fairly much settle for no matter what OS comes on their new Laptop and they are not jumping to order new PCs (additional on that later on). Firms usually look sideways at any OS update. They've got no real interest in expending far more money on new desktops if the aged types they may have appear to be to become doing the job just high-quality. Even though they are doing acquire new PCs, they’ll have their IT install whatsoever is regular in their office environment. Because of this a lot of providers are still managing Windows XP. It may possibly just take years for them to completely improve.

contemporary - just what Facebook needs on small smartphone screens.
When you may have Facebook House in your Android phone, your lock screen turns into a really fairly Cover Feed - Facebook’s new term for its stream of photographs and status updates that take up the entire screen. The phone’s lock screen also displayed the user’s newest notifications - for example, a brand new like or message. Simply swipe for the suitable on a notification and you have removed it. That’s just a single of quite a few fast gestures Facebook has incorporated, making it a lot easier than ever to interact with posts. “Like” and “comment” buttons are suitable there in the bottom left corner, but it is possible to just as effortlessly double-tap to like a post.
